In the scenic town of Steinkjer, Norway, landscape and garden contractor Kurt Bye AS set out to create more than just a patio—he envisioned an inviting outdoor space that blended functionality, art, and nature. The goal was to build a raised patio with built-in seating and integrated planters around the perimeter, offering a place where the community could relax, gather, and enjoy.
To bring the vision to life, Kurt partnered with Storen Betong and chose Recon retaining wall products for their versatility, strength, and clean aesthetic. Thomas Nordahl of Storen Betong led the design execution using a mix of standard Recon Fence Blocks, Full High Cap Blocks, and Column Blocks to shape the main framework of the patio.
But what set this project apart was the creativity in customization. Some of the Column Blocks and Full High Cap Blocks were specially modified to include recessed top surfaces, transforming them into built-in planters. This clever adaptation added a lush layer of greenery to the structure while maintaining the uniform, modern look of the block system.
The result is a beautifully elevated patio space, complete with surrounding greenery and artistic touches like sculpture and integrated seating. This project demonstrates how modular block systems like Recon can go beyond simple retaining applications to create multi-functional, eye-catching outdoor environments.
By combining thoughtful design, durable materials, and skilled craftsmanship, Kurt Bye AS and Storen Betong turned an ordinary idea into an extraordinary community space. The raised patio now stands as a statement piece—offering beauty, functionality, and a lasting contribution to the neighborhood in Steinkjer.
