Water-Based Staining – Minnesota

Matt Strand from Axel H. Ohman Concrete and Masonry has been leading the way in demonstrating how transformative and impactful water-based staining can be when applied to Recon retaining walls. His recent efforts have involved staining select portions of walls on two separate projects, each producing highly impressive and professional results that showcase both the versatility and aesthetic value of these stains.

The first project took place at a McDonald’s in Duluth, Minnesota. By applying a carefully chosen stain to specific sections of the wall, Matt was able to elevate the appearance of the structure, helping it blend more naturally with the surrounding architecture and landscape. The staining not only enhanced the texture and detail of the blocks but also created a more refined and cohesive look for the overall property—something especially important for a national brand with a consistent image to maintain.

The second project was completed for Boisclair Corporation in Golden Valley, Minnesota. This site featured different environmental and design needs, but Matt was able to tailor his staining approach to match the desired outcome. Again, by applying water-based stains to select portions of the Recon wall, he was able to bring out the natural beauty of the concrete, complement the nearby buildings, and provide a more customized, premium finish.

In both cases, the stains were applied with precision and care, demonstrating that even small touches can make a major visual difference. These projects serve as excellent case studies for contractors, developers, or property owners considering whether or not to stain their concrete walls. The images to the right provide a visual comparison of the “before and after” effect and highlight just how effective water-based staining can be when executed thoughtfully by experienced professionals like Matt Strand.
