Project Profiles
White Allen Porche, Dayton OH

FCS was contacted by the owner and the initial solution was to replace the wall with an identical cast in place wall. We did not feel that was the correct solution and after consultation with both a structural engineer and civil engineer, the Recon wall solution with some additional solutions for waterflow that was moving behind the wall. Once the concrete wall removed and all the improper backfill (not only was there no gravel, the material was all clay) was removed we could start building the new wall. The total wall was 144′ long at the top and 12′ high with an effective 10′ height. We had limited space to unload the Recon blocks, aggregate backfill and equipment. This was only our fourth wall and the biggest to date for our company and it is still an easy system to use and solved many of challenges.

Structure: Gravity Retaining Wall

Objective: Remove existing failing cast in place concrete retaining wall with a new retaining wall. The dealership must stay open, still take delivery of new vehicles and loose minimal parking space during project.

Challenges Faced: The existing wall was failing at a rapid rate and a replacement solution was needed quickly. Solving all the potential waterflow issues was our biggest concern. We discovered the original builder never had certified drawing or inspections of the wall so everything from the wall, footer and materials behind it were unknown. Working around and tying into the existing parking lot storm structures and salvaging the wall base posed significant challenges and weather delays.

Outcome: The dealership now has an attractive, and more importantly a structurally sound wall that meets the original build requirements and will far outlast other options.
